What is HS Code: How to Find HS Code
In the world of export and import, HS Code or Harmonized System Code plays a very important role as an international standard system for classifying goods.
Simply put, the Harmonized System (HS) is a goods classification system systematically arranged to facilitate tariff setting, international trade, transportation, and statistical recording. This system is an improvement on previous classification systems so that every country has a uniform guide in identifying types of goods.
In Indonesia, this goods classification is regulated in the Indonesian Customs Tariff Book (BTBMI), the contents of which already refer to the international HS system so that every country has a uniform guide in identifying types of goods.

What is an HS Code?
HS Codes are used globally so that all countries have the same perception of goods traded across borders. With this system, authorities such as Customs and Excise can more easily monitor the flow of goods in and out and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
In addition, the HS Code also helps ensure that tariffs and taxes applied are in accordance with the actual goods category.
HS Code Structure in Indonesia
The international HS system is compiled by the World Customs Organisation (WCO) and consists of the first 6 digits that are valid worldwide.
However, member countries can add additional digits for national needs. In the ASEAN region, this system was then developed into the ASEAN Harmonized Tariff Nomenclature (AHTN) which uses 8-digit codes.
Indonesia itself has implemented the 8-digit AHTN system since March 1, 2017, as listed in the BTBMI. This format provides a more specific classification for each type of goods.

How to Find the HS Code of a Product
Here's how to check the HS Code on the INSW website:
- Open the INSW website via the link https://insw.go.id/intr.
- On the main page, you will see a column labeled “Commodity Detail Search by HS Code or HS Description.”
- Enter the name of the item for which you want to find the HS code. If you are unsure of the correct category, simply type a general word, for example, 'apple', then press the Search button.
- The INSW system will display several results related to that word, such as fresh apples, apple juice, or fermented apples.
- Each category has a different HS Code, and you can choose the one that best suits your product's characteristics.
Check HS Code via Customs BTKI
Aside from the INSW page, you can also check the HS Code via the Customs BTKI website. Here's how:
- Visit the page https://beacukai.go.id/arsip/lan/BTKI-2022.html.
- On that page, you will find BTKI 2022 which contains a list of various goods based on their general groups.
- Find the category you want to explore, for example meat, fish, live animals, coffee, and so on.
- Next, click the detail section, and you will see the HS code listed for each category.
Using HS Code Books or Guides
In addition to online methods, you can also use printed books or guides containing a complete list of HS Codes. These books are usually available at customs offices, trade libraries, or can be purchased from official publishers. Although this method is less practical than online searching, HS Code books or guides are still valuable resources, especially for verification and physical reference.
