Indonesia and Hong Kong Encouraged to Strengthen Logistics Sector Collaboration

Logistics collaboration between Indonesia and Hong Kong presents an exciting mix of strengths in Southeast Asia's trade hub. Both regions are strategically positioned to boost connectivity and trade in Asia, and closer collaboration can offer a competitive advantage. 

This was revealed in the Indonesia-Hong Kong Logistics Industry Collaboration & Global Opportunities seminar organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). The seminar was attended by HKTDC Director Kevin Chiu and ALFI ILFA Vice Chairman Harry Sutanto who gave the opening speech.

Meanwhile, the speaker was the CEO of Hyper Mega Shipping, Reef Man; Director Public Affairs, International Business Cainiao, Chloe Deng; Area Cargo Manager Indonesia Cathay Pasific Airways, Nova Triana; serta Head of Business and Talent Attraction/Investment Promotion Invest Hong Kong, Hillwan Yogi B. at Jakarta, on monday (4/11/2024).

ALFI ILFA Vice Chairman Harry Sutanto said the initiative is a positive sign that logistics issues are an important factor for trade exchanges between Indonesia and Hong Kong and vice versa. Harry Sutanto hopes the seminar will bring together industry players to exchange market insights, discuss possibilities, and explore new opportunities for collaboration.   

“I call it not just Collaboration, but CollaborAction,” said Harry Sutanto in his official statement.  

Meanwhile, CEO of Hyper Mega Shipping, Reef Man explained how the port of Hong Kong has a strategic role to connect the world. According to him, the Port of Hong Kong has a very advanced and efficient infrastructure including loading and unloading facilities.  

"Hong Kong salah satu negara yang memiliki jaringan transportasi tersibuk, seperti Bandara Internasional Hong Kong merupakan pusat internasional terkemuka yang terkenal dengan koneksi dan kapasitas penanganan kargonya," kata Reef Man.

Hong Kong air cargo has been ranked as the world's busiest cargo airport in 2023 according to ACI (Airports Council International). Secondly, said Reef Man, Hong Kong Port is one of the busiest in the world, Hong Kong also has a strategically located port facilitating trade throughout Asia and beyond. According to the UN COMTRADE database Hong Kong's imports from Indonesia reached USD2.98 billion during 2023.  

“Hong Kong Port will continue to play an important role in international trade, supporting economic growth not only in Asia, but also regionally,” he said.

China occupies the first position with a contribution proportion of 30.31 percent of Indonesia's total imports during January-March 2024 where HK is usually a strategic transit point.  

Several aspects of Hong Kong's port have a strategic role in connecting the world such as its strategic location, port facilities, regulations, infrastructure and so on. Through this seminar, Reef Man also exemplifies the application of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the social sector, by sharing knowledge aimed at fostering a stronger logistics network. This initiative is in line with HMS' mission to contribute to socio-economic development and regional prosperity.

Chloe Deng, Director, Public Affairs International Business, Cainiao, one part of Alibaba's smart logistics explained Unlocking the Hidden Potential: Strategic Logistics Partnerships Between Hong Kong and Indonesia.

She explained about the retail industry where there is a trend of decreasing consumption of goods in China, but on the other hand, there is an increase in other imported goods that do not / do not exist in China.

According to Chloe Deng, the Indonesian market is very potential, especially in the cosmetics industry, herbal medicines, Muslim clothes, or other goods in the Chinese market that do not yet exist. Through her company, she hopes to conduct business cooperation with entrepreneurs in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Area Cargo Manager Indonesia, Cathay Pacific Airways, Nova Triana, said Hong Kong has a strategic location to become the leading hub of international flight network connectivity and has the opportunity to expand connectivity for Cathay Pacific airline business.
